European Union support to the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons

Introduction

In September 2021, the European Union (EU) adopted Council Decision (CFSP) 2021/1694 in support of the universalization, implementation and strengthening of the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which May Be Deemed to Be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects (CCW).

This Decision builds on the EU Joint Action 2007/528/CFSP of 23 July 2007 in support of the CCW.

Implementation

The Geneva Branch of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) is responsible for the technical implementation of the projects annexed to Council Decision 2021/1694, which have three pillars:

  1. Preparation for and follow-up on the Sixth Review Conference
  2. Universalization
  3. Facilitation of discussions on under-explored, cross-cutting and emerging issues of relevance to the Convention
