Regional Workshop on The Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004) Hosted By The Government of The Republic of Korea

The Government of the Republic of Korea, in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), hosted a Regional Workshop on Promoting Full Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004) on 27-28 October 2014 in Seoul.

As the current Chair of the UN Security 1540 Committee, the Government of the Republic of Korea initiated this event, which focused on sharing effective implementation practices, revitalizing relevant assistance and developing a future strategy toward the 2016 Comprehensive Review of resolution 1540 (2004).

The UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Ms. Angela Kane outlined UNODA’s activities in assisting the implementation of resolution 1540 (2004), which includes the facilitation of national implementation; enhancing cooperation between international, regional and sub-regional organizations and building effective partnerships with key stakeholders including civil society and industry.


Looking forward, Ms. Kane assured participating Member States that the UN remained ready to fully support Governments’ in implementing resolution 1540 (2004) to save present and future generations from the threats posed by terrorism and weapons of mass destruction.

Representatives from twenty-nine UN Member States from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe as well as numerous international and regional organizations attended the workshop. Participating States engaged in information exchanges and experience sharing, and discussed effective national practices for implementing resolution 1540 (2004) as well as cooperation with civil society and industry.
