Disarmament in Review
BANGKOK, 1-4 October The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) organized a training workshop to develop National Action Plans to reduce illegal arms flows based on the Modular Small Arms Control Implementation Compendium (MOSAIC) in Bangkok (Thailand) from 1 to 4 October 2019. The training workshop, made possible with the financial support of the Government of Germany, brought together approximately 20 participants from ASEAN States and Timor-Leste and international experts from the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), UNRCPD and the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).
The four-day workshop provided concrete, scenario-based, interactive training, focusing on the use of six MOSAIC modules, in order to support the development of National Action Plans to reduce illegal arms flows and effectively incorporate cross-cutting issues for the six participating Member States of South East Asia. By engaging in hypothetical scenario-based activities, States were able to experiment with conducting a national assessment of small arms and light weapons (SALW) control, and so gain first-hand, expert led experience of MOSAIC practices, in order to facilitate the development of National Action Plans at home.
This event is part of the Regional Centre’s ongoing commitment to, at the request of Member States in the region, building the capacity of States in South-East Asia to prevent diversion of and reduce illicit small arms and conventional ammunition, in concert with national projects.
