Call for Papers: The impact of the global increase in military expenditure on the achievement of the sustainable development goals

January 24th, 2025

In the Pact for the Future, adopted by the General Assembly in September 2024, Member States voiced their concern about the potential impact that the global increase in military expenditures could have on investments in sustainable development and sustaining peace. To that end, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to “provide analysis on the impact of the global increase in military expenditure on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by the end of the seventy-ninth session”.

With the aim of encouraging engagement and reflection on this subject by Member States, as well as relevant stakeholders such as international and regional organizations, academia, think tanks, youth and civil society, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs is launching a Call for Papers on the impact of the global increase in military expenditure on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Papers submitted by stakeholders will be considered in the Secretary-General’s analysis to be developed between February and June 2025. In addition, papers and contributions received will be posted on a dedicated webpage.

Interested stakeholders are invited to send its contributions and reflections to conventionalarms-unoda@un.org by 1 March 2025.

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs also encourages stakeholders to organise events and discussions on this topic to contribute to the analysis. The outcomes of these events will be posted on a dedicated webpage.
