Disarmament in Review
On Thursday, 10 October, High Representative Kane met with a delegation from Gensuikyo, also known as the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs. The delegation was in New York at UN headquarters to speak to delegates of Member States on the margins of the General Assembly’s First Committee.
Gensuikyo is one of Japan’s largest anti-nuclear and peace movement organizations. It was established in 1965 with a call for a total ban on nuclear weapons and support for radiation victims. The organization has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times for its tireless work in advocating the total abolition of all nuclear weapons.
During the meeting with the High Representative, Gensuikyo members delivered a symbolic package of petitions representing 3,286,166 signatures, continuing their determined appeal for a total ban on nuclear weapons. Earlier on the same day, the delegation delivered a similar package to His Excellency, Ibrahim Dabbashi, Permanent Representative of Libya to the United Nations, who chair the 68th session of the General Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security).
Two months ago, High Representative Kane sent a message to the organization’s World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs, held every year. The World Conference meets during the week commemorating the anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9) with workshops, plenary sessions, rallies and memorial ceremonies.
